Things to Know

Anyone who has taken a basic economics class understands the law of supply and demand.

supply and demand – the amount of a commodity, product or service available and the desire of buyers for it, considered as factors regulating its price

Since 2010, Hamilton County has seen its lodging inventory increase from about 3,100 rooms to more than 4,225 rooms. Those 1,125+ new rooms represent an increase of 36% in available lodging rooms to sell (not counting the vacation rental by owner properties now available).

By 2020, the total increase in lodging rooms will be closer to 50%.

Until this year, the county sold an astounding number of those new rooms available, and in fact continued to sell rooms in surrounding counties for peak sports, concert and event weekends.

Demand Growth Chart

We’ve talked about this before, but Digital Marketing Manager Jordan Musall has created some visual snapshots of the market that might help explain where we’ve been and what the current scenario is.

The red lines indicate a low and high probability and the continuing blue line indicates the mean forecast through the end of 2019.

Demand Growth

While 2019 will be a challenge, the county has fared well thanks to our dynamic city economic and community development departments that attract businesses, by our anchor attractions that produce excellent products that create demand, and excellent work by the Hamilton County Tourism marketing and sales teams. By layering these demand generators, we are weathering this excess supply better than most!

Sincerely,
Brenda Myers
