CARMEL MARATHON GROWING UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP

Jay Druba is careful not to change too much about the great Carmel Marathon, presented by Franciscan Health. The race has the same start and finish, but onlookers will notice a much bigger event.

“Operationally, we aren’t changing much but our main difference will be we are 30% larger, adding about 1,500 more runners,” the new Carmel Marathon owner said. Druba expect 6,000 runners and approximately 8,000 people overall to descend upon the event, set for April 13 at Carmel’s City Center Drive.

Druba’s path to ownership started during his running career at Franklin College, when he went to intern for the event under previous owner Todd Oliver. He then parlayed that experience into working with the Ironman’s Rock & Roll Series before moving back to Hamilton County and reconnecting with Oliver.

“It’s been a fun journey,” Druba said.

One change to note is the event is one week later, no longer coinciding with Carmel schools spring break. Local businesses Bier Brewery and Athlete Bouquets are partners, alongside the title sponsor Franciscan Health. Druba wants to continue to grow the event, and he said the event has already seen a return by ramping up marketing in drivable areas such as Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati and St. Louis.

“The more people we can bring in to show off the city of Carmel, the better.”
