The great migration south – also called Spring Break – is an Indiana tradition.

Hoosiers pile mini-vans full of family and food and travel to warmer climates and ocean views.

But did you know that Hamilton County also attracts a strong Spring Break business?

Visitors from Chicago, Fort Wayne, South Bend/Elkhart, Michigan, Cincinnati and from throughout greater Central Indiana head to our community to enjoy sports, shopping, and all kinds of entertainment.

About one-third of these visitors are from greater central Indiana and use an outing to Hamilton County as a quick day or overnight trips. The other two-thirds from throughout the state and Midwest. About half of all spring break period visitors stay overnight, with one-third staying at hotels and others staying with friends and family, or at home vacation rentals.

There’s no doubt many come for specific events. Some are here to participate in spring sports competitions, head to retail stores and entertainment venues like Top Golf, or museums like Conner Prairie. While others head out to one of our award-winning golf courses.

Their spring breaks usually begin the first week of April and run through mid-month, according to our data reports.  During the last week of March and first week of April alone, more than 44,000 hotel rooms and 4,000 short-term stays will be sold.

Hamilton County Tourism launched its 2023 spring/summer marketing program in Chicago, throughout Indiana and in Cincinnati with the knowledge that some seek an affordable trip alternative.

There are so many, Hamilton County Tourism’s marketing team came up with 25 Spring Break Ideas for Families – although there are literally dozens of ideas. Share them with your out-of-town friends and help generate tourism economic activity and kick off the 2023 travel season!
